Website problems
The monitoring service notified me that my main address (www.captsmurf.co.uk) was offline. It's happened before and I'm getting fed up with it.
My secondary site (http://www.captainsmurf.com) is working fine, and has only had a very small downtime in last 90 days. So I'm uploading all the stuff from the old site to this one. I've updated the index page, so lots of stuff is now back online.
The secondary site actually gives me loads of space and already holds about 60% of my site anyway. So I'll be pointing my .co.uk address to my .com address and cutting back my reliance on the .co.uk to a minimum (keeping it so I don't lose my email addresses).

Panama Canal tomorrow
we arrive at Balboa tomorrow morning, for a Panama Canal transit hopefully starting at midnight UK time. There are web cams at the locks and at a bridge. We might get on the web. I'll update the time for definite once we get the pilot on board.

Recovering a Gravity Corer after it's journey to the seabed. A length of pipe, containing a plastic tube (liner), with a heavy weight (bomb) on top is lowered at 80metres per second to just above the seabed (this cruise up to 5000m deep). There it is stopped, before it is allowed to punch into the seabed and, hopefully, come back out full of lovely sand and mud.

Taken from the deck of a rolling ship, during a force 8; camera was hand-held. It was just before sunset - the sky is dark because I reduced the exposure to bring out more detail on the surface.
This new ship has so many alarms - it's a wonder the "spy in the cab" microphones can hear us mere humans over the never ending cacophony of bells, whistles and hooters, augmented by the occasional rattle of the many printers, just to remind us that the "paperless" bridge is here to stay.
Rudyard Kipling put it quite eloquently many moons ago:
"The new ship here is fitted according to the reported increase of knowledge among mankind. Namely, she is cumbered end to end, with bells and trumpets and clock and wires, it has been told to me, can call voices out of the air of the waters to con the ship while her crew sleep. The OBS (ocean-bottom seismometer) has spent a while on the seabed (some as deep as 4000m). After the Seismic Survey is completed the OBS must be recovered. A signal is transmitted, the OBS releases a weight which had it anchored to the seabed and it rises to the surface. We manoeuvre the ship up close and a grapple is thrown to snag the rope.

The coaster, "Samson", ahead of us is loading cargo for Easter Island. It is the height of the fruit harvest here.
